Arriving in England two years ago due to religious persecution in Nigeria, John
was keen to start learning a trade. He initially started a full-time City & Guilds
course at Northbrook College in Worthing. Then, on moving to Hove, he
transferred to an Advanced Apprenticeship in electrical installation
through City College Brighton & Hove.
How did you find out about
Apprenticeships?
My Personal Adviser told me
about the scheme and I thought
that would suit me really well as it
would give me the training but also
a chance to earn some money!
Why did you choose to work
at J P Garrett?
I had interviews with three
employers and liked this one best -
we must have liked each other as
they offered me a job and the
opportunity to do my
Apprenticeship here.
What do you do at work?
I've got to the point where I'm now
sent out to do small jobs by myself,
which is great for building up my
confidence. My supervisor Michael
Wright allocates my work and
monitors how I'm doing.
How about your training?
Once a week I go to City College to
study all the theory involved in
electrical installation. I should finish
my NVQ Level 3 in June next year.
Why is an Apprenticeship
right for you?
I think it's the only way to learn
how to be a qualified
electrician - doing all the
practical side at work but
also being properly
trained and getting a
qualification. Once I'm
qualified I may go on to
do more courses -
and one day I'd love
to start my own
small business.
